Fat and Happy in Ecuador (Nov. 5, 2001)

We were so surprised to discover there are dozens of
internet cafes here in Quito, Ecuador.  We will not be
in Quito for long (our project is in a small pueblo)
so we thought we would get in another email today.

First, thank you all so much for your good wishes.  Be
assured we got them and they mean a lot to us.  Please
forgive the mass email.  We only get half an hour on
the computer, so it is the only way.

Our trip here went smoothly and the weather is
beautiful -- much warmer than we expected.  Sunny and
bright.  The only thing slowing us down is the
altitude.  They say Quito is at nearly 10,000 feet and
we are very sleepy.  A short walk makes us out of
breath (yes, even Chris!)  Today is already better
than yesterday, though.

So far the food is great -- trout, rice, fried
bananas, cheese.  All very tasty.

Tomorrow Sherry begins teaching in a pueblo 30 minutes
from Quito, on the slope of an inactive volcano. It is
a rural, agricultural area and is supposed to be very
beautiful. The town has never had volunteers before.
Chris joins her Thursday, after 3 days of intensive
Spanish classes.  We will be teaching English and
basic math (in Spanish!) and living with a host
family.
